As Finite Humans We Are Unable To Totally Understand God

“Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number” Job 9:10

It seemed as though Bildad and the others had God’s ways all “figured out”, but Job wasn’t quite so sure. Job protests, “Look here, it’s impossible to wrap your head around God.” He told his friend Bildad, “Most of the time we don’t have a clue what God is truly up to…and frankly, neither do you!”

Job was right, humans can’t read the mind of God. There had been a private conference in the heavenlies between God and Satan back in chapter 1, that Job wasn’t privy to. Had Job been given a head’s up, he could have told Bildad with assurance that he did not know what he was talking about. Job’s comments remind me of something the brother of Jesus wrote, “But these speak evil of those things which they know not…” (Jude 1:10). The fact is, things like the death of a loved one rarely make sense. We feel as though they died before their time or that they had so much left to do. Lynette died at the young age of fifty-two leaving me with five unmarried daughters. There was nothing about this that made any sense to me. She was greatly used by God and needed by all of us.

You also may have turned to God and asked why. And that just might be the time when heaven will be absolutely silent. But as Pastor Adrian Rogers said, “Life is not a problem to be solved, it is a mystery to be lived.” That is what the book of Job teaches. We do not walk by sight but by faith. You just have to constantly…constantly be finding a promise from God’s Word to live on. Job didn’t know why all this happened but instead of walking away from God, he walked towards God in an attitude of trust. C. H. Spurgeon said, “God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be confused.” A similar thought runs through a Christian chorus that says, “If I cannot trace His hand, I can always trust His heart.” You can do this, friend!

When one who you love so dearly is taken away, then you know, just like Job discovered, that you always have God! God reduced Job down to nothing, and he learned that God was sufficient. You may never know why you had to suffer your loss. That’s okay. What’s important is that you know Him. You can and must trust Him!
